There have been satellite shots issued this morning that indicate a sudden shift in the coast that has placed the shoreline up to 45 feet inland in certain places- an amount that the experts indicate requires years, not days, to occur.
The most severe impact was felt in and around Bonita Springs and Sanibel Island, where residents have long been used to the ocean washing up against backyards that were once considered securely inland. Reporters were informed by a homeowner in Estero Bay that her seawall is now fully submerged. Yesterday morning, it was there, she said. This morning it has vanished.
What is Causing the Rapid Coastal Erosion in Florida?
Scientists observing the Gulf Coast believe that the change is somehow connected with a combination of high spring tides, unusually warm water in the Gulf, and slight sediment movement underwater that undermined the natural sandbars during the night.
Although Southwest Florida has been fighting beach erosion over the decades, the pace at which this process is occurring has astonished even longtime researchers. They caution that the same situation may recur with rising sea levels, as storm patterns become increasingly unpredictable.
The time could not be worse. The hurricane season is only a few weeks away, and most coastal properties and enterprises are on soil which is now much more vulnerable. Lee and Collier County tourism authorities are already receiving calls from concerned tourists who made reservations to spend their spring holidays on the same broad beaches they spotted in last year’s brochures.
Scientists Caution About Higher Dangers Coming to Southwest Florida
Analysts are urging urgent action. They suggest emergency beach feeding schemes, enhanced dune rehabilitation, and new evacuation plans for low-lying areas. Otherwise, whole areas of coastline, they say, will be at risk of permanent loss, endangering homes, roads, and the multi-billion dollar tourism economy of the region.
The state and county crews have begun monitoring flights daily and installing temporary barriers at the most sensitive locations. In the meantime, the authorities are requesting the residents to leave the newly shrunken beaches and report any additional changes.
Southwest Florida has been at the sea’s doorstep. This abrupt change of coast is like a poke in the ribs, reminding us that the doorstep is on the move- and it is moving more rapidly than anybody foresaw. Local leaders believe that the next few weeks will determine whether the region can remain ahead of the shifting shoreline or must withdraw behind it.
